Pets on Whiskers Set Get Once-Over By Phil Klein & Top Holistic Vet Dr. Marty Goldstein For TV Demo, The Dr. Marty Show

Phil Klein and Dr. Martin Goldstein on set June 22nd, 2012

Phil Klein, owner, Whiskers Holistic, and Dr. Marty Goldstein exchanging info on natural petcare solutions.

Crew members for the pending Dr. Marty Show squeezed equipment into every inch of Whiskers Holistic Petcare on East 9th Street on a Friday in June. Dr. Marty is Dr. Martin Goldstein http://drmarty.com/, the noted holistic veterinarian and author of The Nature of Animal Healing, who is a co-founder of the AVHMA, the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association. A top production team from film and TV is behind launching Dr. Marty’s own TV show, and they came to shoot dogs and cats getting advice in the temple of alternative petcare, Whiskers Holistic.

Phil Klein, an owner of the 24-year-old Whiskers, is a holistic sage in his own right. His efforts have been side-by-side with Dr. Marty in educating pet owners on what changes to make in feeding, exercise, and vaccinations to have healthy cats, dogs, birds, rabbits, and other pets. Phil and Dr. Marty have been friends for 25 years. In many cases people’s pets received the benefit of two opinions, and Phil’s suggestions on supplementation and diet were right in sync with Dr. Marty’s directions. It was like watching two guys trading baseball cards.

As luck would have it, the parade of dogs and cats that came in to meet the Doc were a notably photogenic group of New York pets. First up, the glamorous Afghan hound, Teddy, whose owner, Susan Lietz, rescued him from a deplorable situation. She reported that this beautiful dog, whose breed runs as fast as the wind, was kept in a basement for two years. He’s out now, thanks to her, and even modeled for a German fashion magazine, see Susan’s blog: http://bustedlovedogblog.blogspot.com/

Unmissable were two Cirneco dell’Etna dogs, Midas and Pisa, who looked like smaller versions of Pharoah hounds and were so friendly, you couldn’t get enough of them!

Owner Stephen Hoerz explained that the 3,000 year-old breed is actually based on the Pharoah hound, who was brought to Malta, then Phoenicia, and finally arrived in Sicily. Here’s the whole story: http://www.cirneco.com/Welcome.html.

It’s also gratifying to hear Hoerz relay how Whiskers helped three-year-old Midas with his digestive problems, using colostrum and Rainbow Dog Oil, with the result of normalizing his POOP! YAY! Hoerz runs the delicious catering and take-out shop on Hudson Street, Ready to Eat http://www.readytoeat.net/

Then there was Prometheus, the magnificent and muscular Rottweiler, owned by an East Village couple with a dare-devil act to astound even Philippe Petit http://www.manonwire.com/ . Vlad Marco and Sky Soto are fire performers, with their thrilling show called Eros Fyre: http://www.skyvladerosfyre.com/ Check out their website for a public performance upcoming July 13th in the Times Square area. They also perform at private events, in film and TV.

Dr. Marty was extremely generous with his time and spoke with as many animal owners concerned about their pets as he could possibly fit in one day. The program plans to include a segment at Whiskers in every show, and we’ll let you know more as the production progresses.

For now, please come in, as usual, to consult Phil (“The Dogfather”) in his corner of the store most days except Tuesday. He’s also available by phone. And you can call-in to Dr. Marty’s show, “Ask Martha’s Vet!” (yes, THAT Martha) on SiriusXM radio Ch. 110 on Monday nights, with re-airings through the week.

Meanwhile, enjoy some of the subjects of the day, below. Thank you to Animal Ambassadors and Shoot the Catfish Productions, and all our great customers who waited patiently to be seen. See you in the store, and maybe on TV!

Dr. Marty is our favorite holistic vet, and a renowned leader in integrative medicine for animals for over 25 years http://www.drmarty.com, as long as Whiskers Holistic Petcare has been in business. He is one of the first veterinarians to combine the best of both conventional and holistic medicine with powerful, curative results for health, and against disease. Delve into his book, The Nature of Animal Healing, to read about how his techniques have turned around cases of pets for whom the prognosis was dire.

Developments are underway to launch The Dr. Marty Show on TV. To produce a demo to entice full-out production for TV syndication, a first shoot is planned at Whiskers Holistic Petcare in the East Village on Friday, June 22, from Noon to 4PM.

Some pets will have the benefit of a free consultation by both Dr. Marty and Whiskers own expert advisor, Phil Klein, with recommendations for both holistic and conventional remedies, whether a cat, dog, rabbit, bird or reptile. Please bring your pets!

As some of you know, Phil is always available in-store and by phone for complimentary consults with customers and their pets. Now, Dr. Marty joins Phil’s corner for a lucky group of pets that get the advice of both. All will be filmed on-camera.

We’d love to have as many fans of Whiskers, mammals and otherwise, be part of the shoot. The Dr. Marty Show crew will interview customers about your visit to Whiskers, and your choices in how you care for your pets. If you can, please bring your pets! More details will be provided on-site on June 22nd.

It’s also a good chance to buy Dr. Goldstein’s book at Whiskers, and available on Kindle from Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/The-Nature-Animal-Healing-ebook/dp/B002IPZBWC/ref=kinw_dp_ke?ie=UTF8&m=AG56TWVU5XWC2

See you Friday, 6/22, from 12 to 4PM at Whiskers Holistic Petcare 235 East 9th Street, in the heart of the East Village. And, maybe we’ll see you on TV!

Linda’s Feral Cats of NY Brought Unferal “Friendlies” to Adopt

trailer in front of Whiskers Holistic Petcare in the East Village on Saturday, 5/26, there were no feral cats to adopt. “We do not adopt ferals. These are the friendlies,” said Linda Bryant, who runs the efficient 10-year-old rescue organization with a long-term team of volunteers. Feral cats, said Linda, are assisted through the organizations’s trap, neuter, return system, and are provided food where they hang out, whether in Williamsburg or Woodside. Those cats are not adoptable.

“Feral cats are either domestic cats that have reverted to the wild from becoming lost, or were born to a feral mother and lived in the wild,” she explained. “They have to be returned to where they were picked up to find the food and environment they’re used to,” she said.

Inside the trailer, however, were about a dozen of the most beautiful,

Eddie, obviously waiting for his choice of partner.

very large, cats lounging around in individual crates, as well as several kittens like Pansy, Willy, and Wally, who were about 6 weeks old. Teddy, at two weeks old was being bottlefed every coupla hours.

Two-week-old Teddy getting a start in life.

“He was the only kitten from his litter not eaten by raccoons in Astoria,” said Linda. “He’s young enough tolove people, and he’s up for adoption.”

The cats had been rescued from very difficult – okay, let’s say, AWFUL – situations. These cats were ready for adoption. While some were curled up in their litter boxes (“for security,” said Linda), others were very curious about the trail of people coming in and out, looking for love. These sturdy, luxurious, big gray cats stood at the bars of their trailers, watching, watching, watching – happy to be taken out for a cuddle and a pet, or to get some lamb lungs, also donated by Whiskers.

There was Eric, a great big gray and white cat who had been tied up with a rope in a store, and rescued by Racquel Guitterez. Taking him in her arms, Eric nuzzled her nose, and then settled in. Clearly, he knew a good thing when he found it. He was such a charmer, he received an application to be fostered with a view towards adopting him. With five cats of her own, Racquel is a committed cat rescuer, and wants to remain a source for fostering.

Ceara Murtagh, a visitor to the trailer, was enchanted by Friday, a black and white kitten. The feelings were mutual, as the irrepressible Friday played with her through the bars. Ceara came from the Upper West Side for the event, and with two adult cats, was approved as a foster mother for Friday –

and Friday’s brother, who would join them the next day.

The glamour cat of the day had to be Pansy, one of three littermates. Pansy was called a “diluted calico,” in pastel tones of peach and gray, and was absolutely a stunner. She had two applications in for adoption.

The Mayor’s Alliance for NYC Animals www.animalalliancenyc.org  loans the mobile adoption van to Alliance Participating Organizations, such as the North Shore Animal League www.animalleague.org, which provides the van to small rescue groups once a month.

Whiskers Holistic Petcare, as a pioneer in natural pet care for dogs, cats and almost any kind of domestic animal, is an advocate for animal rescue. In the window of the East Village store, you can see the amazing Whiskers Rescue Ranch, set-up as a temporary home for cats awaiting adoption and a permanent home. Connected to rescue groups throughout the city, anyone considering adopting a dog or a cat can turn to Whiskers in the East Village, and in the Astoria store, for whom to call in the first steps of the process.

Here’s to happy homes for all cats from Linda’s Feral Cats of NY – and everywhere!

Adopt Two Brothers and Fall in Love: Meet Tommy Tune and Rhett Butler

Tommy Tune & Rhett Butler 028

Tommy Tune, left, and his brother, Rhett Butler, hanging out in Whiskers Rescue Ranch.

Handsome boys, these three-year-old brothers are full of personality and as friendly as can be. Plus, they love each other and cannot imagine being parted. Ever. They’ve been together from the litter, and we do not want them separated.

The red one is Rhett Butler. A charmer like his namesake, he rules the roost and lets you know it. He is very interested in people and everything happening around him. You could say, he’s the curious cat – and a real flirt. A lovely, funny boy, he will jump high in the air in excitement at feeding time.

Tommy Tune is his bro. Gorgeous, right? Mellow and more introspective than his silly brother Rhett, Tommy is a watcher. Happy to just be, he needs to be near YOU.

The two of them snooze curled up around each other. They are just adorable. They had been adopted, but tragically, the family became homeless. Luckily, they did the right thing, and brought the cats right back to us at Whiskers. We’ve loved having them in the Whiskers Rescue Ranch.

But they need a real home. Won’t it be yours? Both are neutered and in good health, with a bonafide health certificate.

Tommy Tune lounges in a very comfy cat hammock in Whiskers Rescue Ranch.

Rhett and Tommy have not lived with other animals, as far as we know. It would probably be best if they were the only cats in the household. In this case, experienced cat owners are preferred, as we want to make sure they find a forever home with a devoted care giver.

Come meet Rhett and Tommy – they’re in our window at Whiskers Holistic Pet Care, 235 East 9th Street btwn 2nd and 3rd Avenues, New York, NY. If you check them out and want more information, please come right in and ask about adopting them.

Call us about them at 212-979-5732 – and leave a message with a phone number to reach you back. They are well-mannered, classically beautiful pussy cats, ready for lots of love in a home to call their own.

Apartment Therapy: Whiskers Review

So many kind words from apartment therapy!

For full article, click here.

“Quoting Marie, any list of great pet stores supporting apartment life will have to take into account that the savvy, “go to different stores for different products.”

Whiskers is a far cry from the posh, high end poodle spas in the West Village. Specializing in natural food and remedies for for all pets, this “holistic” East Village gets rave reviews and has a “full service” website:

Hazel says: Whiskers has an excellent selection of holistic products, great staff, delivery, AND open on xmas … Plus a kitty “rescue ranch”!

Lisa says: My favorite pet store in the city, by far, is the estimable if uncreatively named Whiskers…

The owners are incredibly knowing about holistic petcare, and very generous with that knowledge. They have an amazing selection of byproducts-free (pet)food. And they deliver–even to Brooklyn!”

Shopping With Andrea Reese, star of “Cirque Jacqueline”

Andrea Reese loves Whiskers! Check out her adventures in NYC, and her visit to Whiskers.

“Reese’s reason for counting her pennies became clear when we arrived at our final stop: Whiskers Holistic Pet Care (235 East Ninth Street; 212-979-2532; http://www.1800whiskers.com).
“This is a great pet store,” said Reese, who became a vegetarian after visiting the Catskills Animal Shelter several months ago, where she bonded with cows and horses and a pig that “you could lie on top of and he was so happy he would almost purr.”
“I’ve always had a huge love of animals, but I was disconnected in a way,” she added. “The experience of really connecting with animals right in front of you and hearing what goes on inmeat factories…I couldn’t eat meat anymore. I felt like I wanted to do more, so I went to an animal shelter in Queens and met all these dogs and cats, and I’m going to start volunteering there. They also need food, so I thought I should start putting my money where my mouth is.”
Inside, Reese grabbed a basket to stock up on tasty canine treats, which she had already arranged for the store to deliver to the Queens Community Animal Shelter the following day.
“We have $43 for food and a $5 tip for the driver,” she said. But first, she picked up a box of Bunny Kraze Greens for Hector and Achilles ($3.99). “These are greens that you grow yourself and then feed to the hamster,” she explained. When asked what she had against pre-made greens (or, ummm, goldfish), Reese laughed. “You’re right! This is like growing Triops in a tank. The whole process is very exciting.”
We would expect nothing less from the daughter of a research scientist whose idea of childhood fun was to accompany her dad — the head of neurobiology at the National Institutes of Health — to the lab on weekends, where they’d have horseshoe crab races or spray silicone on the floors and “skate” down the halls.
“We were around all these animals, though I was always really disturbed by the experimentation,” she recalled. “I wrote my college essay on animal cruelty instead of on myself, so this goes way back…To the dog food we go!”
She placed her basket on the floor and began filling it with enticingly named Wellness and Merrick puppy products. Campfire Trout, Thanksgiving Turkey, Chicken Drumette, Wild Buffalo and even Grammy’s Pot Pie went into the pile.
“That would be a great burrito,” Reese opined of the vegetarian Sweet Potato formula. “And you can’t go wrong with Cowboy Cookout. I’m so happy about this… What is venison?” We reply as she’s poised to toss another can in the cart.
“Oh gross,” she shuddered. “I can’t buy that. It just feels wrong, with Christmas and reindeer and all that. Blitzen almost got blitzed! I’m going to put this back.”
The burgeoning activist counted the cans (17, at $1.79 and $1.89 each) and decided to spend her last $3 on some Waggers Originals Natural Treats, which included Savory Casserole, Hearty Stew and a yummy-sounding Peanut Butter and Rolled Oats cookie (woof!).
The cashier entered the shelter’s delivery information into the computer and tallied up the damage ($46.59, with tax and driver’s tip), bringing Reese’s grand FWD Shopping With total to $99.51.
Guess paying attention in third grade math class really does pay off.
“My main interest has always been helping others, but performing and creative expression is crucial, too,” Reese said as she buttoned her coat before heading back outside. “So putting them together, like for the Red Cross thing, is great because it uses everything. Today was perfect, too, because I got something for myself, which is really fun, but then I did something good, as well. It’s the perfect balance.”
Like the complex icon she so skillfully portrays in “Cirque Jacqueline,” Reese is the true
embodiment of a multifaceted Renaissance Woman, circa — make that cirque — 2005.”
