Whiskers Holistic Pet Care is much more than a quirky pet store.

Whiskers Holistic Pet Care is much more than a quirky pet store. Owners Randi and Phil Klein opened the shop on E. 9th St. in 1988 and have been on a mission to educate pet owners about alternatives to mainstream pet care practices ever since. Whiskers focuses primarily on cats and dogs, but they also provide information about caring for birds and other small creatures. Neither Phil nor Randi are veterinarians, but their consultation is based on the work of folks like veterinary guru Dr. Marty Goldstein. In general, holistic pet care emphasizes homeopathy and herbal remedies over pharmaceutical options. Over the years the thriving operation expanded, annexing the much larger space next door in 1998 and a new outlet in Astoria, Queens in 2008. The Kleins know personally the manufacturers of the products they carry and also stock a “Whiskers’ Own” line of products. Whiskers also hosts events like vet consultations, offers free nail clipping services, and is involved in finding homes for shelter animals.                        –

Gideon: A Social Guy, Friend to All But Canines

Featured

Gideon, the cat, showing off his green eyes.

The latest cat for adoption in our Astoria store is Gideon, a social character if ever there was one. He sits at the door of Whiskers Rescue Ranch to view the action, and sweetly meows that he would like to come out and talk! An absolutely cuddly cat, he’s very responsive to staff or strangers, and clearly loves people. He is not from the aloof cat circle, and is quite warm and curious to get to know new visitors, get a scratch, and settle in someone’s arms.

When he came to Whiskers, he had an eye infection that we took care of with veterinary care, and he’s just fine now. He’s about one-year-old and neutered, just about the most affectionate cat we’ve ever met in this species. He is definitely not a loner, but does stretch out to take a good nap in the lazy sunny afternoons.

Tommy, a staff member, gives Gideon a nice scratch.

However, he is not a fan of the canine sect. In fact, when a dog enters the store, he’ll jump on the highest ramp in the ranch, with hairs on end, hissing at the intruder to let him know just what kind of threat he can be. So, no dogs in a home for Gideon!

If interested in adopting him, please call us at 718-626-8590 or come in and meet him. Tell friends! He is a really happy cat, and as much as we all love having him around, we hope to find him the happy home he deserves.

Mr. Grey Needs New Home: Prefers Modern Design, Likes Books

Featured

Mr. Grey is so handsome, he will take your breath away. The Adonis of the moment, Mr. Grey finds himself in Whiskers Rescue Ranch, solo. Anastasia, the ingénue cat he met by chance, has flown the coop, so to speak, and has been adopted before he could blink an emerald eye. Now he awaits the right one to come along and take him home.

“The Ranch is okay, a little homey for my tastes,” says the attractive and confident one-year-old black-and-white cat. “I prefer modern architecture, you know, the whole stone, steel, glass and white leather look. A view is nice. I lost my funds in a Ponzi scheme, and have no choice in décor here,” he rationalizes. “I would hope that whoever rescues me from the Ranch shares my sense of design. The food, while not Per Se http://perseny.com/ is tasty, and the service is timely.  I’ve inferred that adding truffle oil improves everything but who’s going to listen to a cat in reduced circumstances?

“However, the height is nice and I can catnap without disturbance.”

Mr. Grey will wake right up for treats, and a nice stroke on the back. Large and lovely, he has a permanent Cheshire Cat smile on his beautiful face. He will make a wonderful companion to a devoted cat lover, especially one who likes books http://www.amazon.com/Fifty-Shades-Grey-Book-Trilogy/dp/0345803485/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1338922272&sr=8-1. And, as he harmonically shared the Ranch space with Anastasia, Mr. Grey more than likely will fit into a home with other cats already there. Of course…Anastasia brought a gleam to his eye….

Mr. Grey likes the view from high up in the Ranch.

Come meet Mr. Grey – he’s in our window at Whiskers Holistic Pet Care, 235 East 9th Street btwn 2nd and 3rd Avenues, in New York’s East Village. Please come right in and ask about adopting him. Or call us at 212-979-5732 – and leave a message with a phone number to reach you back.

Just remember, Mr. Grey likes to be in control.

Linda’s Feral Cats of NY Brought Unferal “Friendlies” to Adopt

trailer in front of Whiskers Holistic Petcare in the East Village on Saturday, 5/26, there were no feral cats to adopt. “We do not adopt ferals. These are the friendlies,” said Linda Bryant, who runs the efficient 10-year-old rescue organization with a long-term team of volunteers. Feral cats, said Linda, are assisted through the organizations’s trap, neuter, return system, and are provided food where they hang out, whether in Williamsburg or Woodside. Those cats are not adoptable.

“Feral cats are either domestic cats that have reverted to the wild from becoming lost, or were born to a feral mother and lived in the wild,” she explained. “They have to be returned to where they were picked up to find the food and environment they’re used to,” she said.

Inside the trailer, however, were about a dozen of the most beautiful,

Eddie, obviously waiting for his choice of partner.

very large, cats lounging around in individual crates, as well as several kittens like Pansy, Willy, and Wally, who were about 6 weeks old. Teddy, at two weeks old was being bottlefed every coupla hours.

Two-week-old Teddy getting a start in life.

“He was the only kitten from his litter not eaten by raccoons in Astoria,” said Linda. “He’s young enough tolove people, and he’s up for adoption.”

The cats had been rescued from very difficult – okay, let’s say, AWFUL – situations. These cats were ready for adoption. While some were curled up in their litter boxes (“for security,” said Linda), others were very curious about the trail of people coming in and out, looking for love. These sturdy, luxurious, big gray cats stood at the bars of their trailers, watching, watching, watching – happy to be taken out for a cuddle and a pet, or to get some lamb lungs, also donated by Whiskers.

There was Eric, a great big gray and white cat who had been tied up with a rope in a store, and rescued by Racquel Guitterez. Taking him in her arms, Eric nuzzled her nose, and then settled in. Clearly, he knew a good thing when he found it. He was such a charmer, he received an application to be fostered with a view towards adopting him. With five cats of her own, Racquel is a committed cat rescuer, and wants to remain a source for fostering.

Ceara Murtagh, a visitor to the trailer, was enchanted by Friday, a black and white kitten. The feelings were mutual, as the irrepressible Friday played with her through the bars. Ceara came from the Upper West Side for the event, and with two adult cats, was approved as a foster mother for Friday –

and Friday’s brother, who would join them the next day.

The glamour cat of the day had to be Pansy, one of three littermates. Pansy was called a “diluted calico,” in pastel tones of peach and gray, and was absolutely a stunner. She had two applications in for adoption.

The Mayor’s Alliance for NYC Animals www.animalalliancenyc.org  loans the mobile adoption van to Alliance Participating Organizations, such as the North Shore Animal League www.animalleague.org, which provides the van to small rescue groups once a month.

Whiskers Holistic Petcare, as a pioneer in natural pet care for dogs, cats and almost any kind of domestic animal, is an advocate for animal rescue. In the window of the East Village store, you can see the amazing Whiskers Rescue Ranch, set-up as a temporary home for cats awaiting adoption and a permanent home. Connected to rescue groups throughout the city, anyone considering adopting a dog or a cat can turn to Whiskers in the East Village, and in the Astoria store, for whom to call in the first steps of the process.

Here’s to happy homes for all cats from Linda’s Feral Cats of NY – and everywhere!

Adopted! What a Day to Remember: Rhett & Tommy Found a Home

Featured

Whiskers has arranged hundreds of adoptions over the years. But Rhett Butler and Tommy Tune were special. Besides the fact that they were gorgeous, they had already found a home when the family’s unfortunate circumstances of becoming homeless forced them to return the two brothers to Whiskers. We applaud them for taking the right step in bringing them back to us.

Word got around about these two beautiful three-year-olds. A friend told a friend, and that friend came into Whiskers on Memorial Day, became quite taken by the brothers’ antics and warm personalities, and voila! They bonded, and went home with a wonderful artist whose studio was empty without the inspiring presence of cats.

We wish them the best.

Rhett gets a chin rub, and Tommy snuggles up for one, too.

And now, come check out the year-old Anastasia and Mr. Gray, new residents (temporarily, of course) in Whiskers Rescue Ranch. Which happens to be in the East Village, and has a corral in Astoria, too. Come meet them…and please spread the word. Photos coming!

Adopt Two Brothers and Fall in Love: Meet Tommy Tune and Rhett Butler

Tommy Tune & Rhett Butler 028

Tommy Tune, left, and his brother, Rhett Butler, hanging out in Whiskers Rescue Ranch.

Handsome boys, these three-year-old brothers are full of personality and as friendly as can be. Plus, they love each other and cannot imagine being parted. Ever. They’ve been together from the litter, and we do not want them separated.

The red one is Rhett Butler. A charmer like his namesake, he rules the roost and lets you know it. He is very interested in people and everything happening around him. You could say, he’s the curious cat – and a real flirt. A lovely, funny boy, he will jump high in the air in excitement at feeding time.

Tommy Tune is his bro. Gorgeous, right? Mellow and more introspective than his silly brother Rhett, Tommy is a watcher. Happy to just be, he needs to be near YOU.

The two of them snooze curled up around each other. They are just adorable. They had been adopted, but tragically, the family became homeless. Luckily, they did the right thing, and brought the cats right back to us at Whiskers. We’ve loved having them in the Whiskers Rescue Ranch.

But they need a real home. Won’t it be yours? Both are neutered and in good health, with a bonafide health certificate.

Tommy Tune lounges in a very comfy cat hammock in Whiskers Rescue Ranch.

Rhett and Tommy have not lived with other animals, as far as we know. It would probably be best if they were the only cats in the household. In this case, experienced cat owners are preferred, as we want to make sure they find a forever home with a devoted care giver.

Come meet Rhett and Tommy – they’re in our window at Whiskers Holistic Pet Care, 235 East 9th Street btwn 2nd and 3rd Avenues, New York, NY. If you check them out and want more information, please come right in and ask about adopting them.

Call us about them at 212-979-5732 – and leave a message with a phone number to reach you back. They are well-mannered, classically beautiful pussy cats, ready for lots of love in a home to call their own.
