Holistic Pet Care – My visit to Whiskers in the East Village – Hustling from breakfast in the East Village – I finally had a chance to stop by Whiskers Holistic Pet Store. I originally learned about it through a New York Times article and it’s been on my short list of places to check out. After a very impromptu walk in, I found myself plopped on a stool in a cozy corner of the (click below for rest of the story) http://blog.waggit.com/2012/11/07/holistic-pet-care-my-visit-to-whiskers-in-the-east-village/

Sharon – One of our Groomers
The latest cat for adoption in our Astoria store is Gideon, a social character if ever there was one. He sits at the door of Whiskers Rescue Ranch to view the action, and sweetly meows that he would like to come out and talk! An absolutely cuddly cat, he’s very responsive to staff or strangers, and clearly loves people. He is not from the aloof cat circle, and is quite warm and curious to get to know new visitors, get a scratch, and settle in someone’s arms.
When he came to Whiskers, he had an eye infection that we took care of with veterinary care, and he’s just fine now. He’s about one-year-old and neutered, just about the most affectionate cat we’ve ever met in this species. He is definitely not a loner, but does stretch out to take a good nap in the lazy sunny afternoons.
However, he is not a fan of the canine sect. In fact, when a dog enters the store, he’ll jump on the highest ramp in the ranch, with hairs on end, hissing at the intruder to let him know just what kind of threat he can be. So, no dogs in a home for Gideon!
If interested in adopting him, please call us at 718-626-8590 or come in and meet him. Tell friends! He is a really happy cat, and as much as we all love having him around, we hope to find him the happy home he deserves.
Pets on Whiskers Set Get Once-Over By Phil Klein & Top Holistic Vet Dr. Marty Goldstein For TV Demo, The Dr. Marty Show
Crew members for the pending Dr. Marty Show squeezed equipment into every inch of Whiskers Holistic Petcare on East 9th Street on a Friday in June. Dr. Marty is Dr. Martin Goldstein http://drmarty.com/, the noted holistic veterinarian and author of The Nature of Animal Healing, who is a co-founder of the AVHMA, the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association. A top production team from film and TV is behind launching Dr. Marty’s own TV show, and they came to shoot dogs and cats getting advice in the temple of alternative petcare, Whiskers Holistic.
Phil Klein, an owner of the 24-year-old Whiskers, is a holistic sage in his own right. His efforts have been side-by-side with Dr. Marty in educating pet owners on what changes to make in feeding, exercise, and vaccinations to have healthy cats, dogs, birds, rabbits, and other pets. Phil and Dr. Marty have been friends for 25 years. In many cases people’s pets received the benefit of two opinions, and Phil’s suggestions on supplementation and diet were right in sync with Dr. Marty’s directions. It was like watching two guys trading baseball cards.
As luck would have it, the parade of dogs and cats that came in to meet the Doc were a notably photogenic group of New York pets. First up, the glamorous Afghan hound, Teddy, whose owner, Susan Lietz, rescued him from a deplorable situation. She reported that this beautiful dog, whose breed runs as fast as the wind, was kept in a basement for two years. He’s out now, thanks to her, and even modeled for a German fashion magazine, see Susan’s blog: http://bustedlovedogblog.blogspot.com/
Unmissable were two Cirneco dell’Etna dogs, Midas and Pisa, who looked like smaller versions of Pharoah hounds and were so friendly, you couldn’t get enough of them!
Owner Stephen Hoerz explained that the 3,000 year-old breed is actually based on the Pharoah hound, who was brought to Malta, then Phoenicia, and finally arrived in Sicily. Here’s the whole story: http://www.cirneco.com/Welcome.html.
It’s also gratifying to hear Hoerz relay how Whiskers helped three-year-old Midas with his digestive problems, using colostrum and Rainbow Dog Oil, with the result of normalizing his POOP! YAY! Hoerz runs the delicious catering and take-out shop on Hudson Street, Ready to Eat http://www.readytoeat.net/
Then there was Prometheus, the magnificent and muscular Rottweiler, owned by an East Village couple with a dare-devil act to astound even Philippe Petit http://www.manonwire.com/ . Vlad Marco and Sky Soto are fire performers, with their thrilling show called Eros Fyre: http://www.skyvladerosfyre.com/ Check out their website for a public performance upcoming July 13th in the Times Square area. They also perform at private events, in film and TV.
Dr. Marty was extremely generous with his time and spoke with as many animal owners concerned about their pets as he could possibly fit in one day. The program plans to include a segment at Whiskers in every show, and we’ll let you know more as the production progresses.
For now, please come in, as usual, to consult Phil (“The Dogfather”) in his corner of the store most days except Tuesday. He’s also available by phone. And you can call-in to Dr. Marty’s show, “Ask Martha’s Vet!” (yes, THAT Martha) on SiriusXM radio Ch. 110 on Monday nights, with re-airings through the week.
Meanwhile, enjoy some of the subjects of the day, below. Thank you to Animal Ambassadors and Shoot the Catfish Productions, and all our great customers who waited patiently to be seen. See you in the store, and maybe on TV!
Pets & People Come One, Come All! TV Shoot at Whiskers: Fri 6/22 fm 12 to 4PM for The Dr. Marty Show:
Dr. Marty Goldstein, The Renowned Holistic Vet Your Pet Wants to See, Author of The Nature of Animal Healing, and Phil Klein, Whiskers Own Sage of Natural Petcare, will Confer on Some-as-Yet-To-Be-Star Pets
Dr. Marty is our favorite holistic vet, and a renowned leader in integrative medicine for animals for over 25 years http://www.drmarty.com, as long as Whiskers Holistic Petcare has been in business. He is one of the first veterinarians to combine the best of both conventional and holistic medicine with powerful, curative results for health, and against disease. Delve into his book, The Nature of Animal Healing, to read about how his techniques have turned around cases of pets for whom the prognosis was dire.
Developments are underway to launch The Dr. Marty Show on TV. To produce a demo to entice full-out production for TV syndication, a first shoot is planned at Whiskers Holistic Petcare in the East Village on Friday, June 22, from Noon to 4PM.
Some pets will have the benefit of a free consultation by both Dr. Marty and Whiskers own expert advisor, Phil Klein, with recommendations for both holistic and conventional remedies, whether a cat, dog, rabbit, bird or reptile. Please bring your pets!
As some of you know, Phil is always available in-store and by phone for complimentary consults with customers and their pets. Now, Dr. Marty joins Phil’s corner for a lucky group of pets that get the advice of both. All will be filmed on-camera.
We’d love to have as many fans of Whiskers, mammals and otherwise, be part of the shoot. The Dr. Marty Show crew will interview customers about your visit to Whiskers, and your choices in how you care for your pets. If you can, please bring your pets! More details will be provided on-site on June 22nd.
It’s also a good chance to buy Dr. Goldstein’s book at Whiskers, and available on Kindle from Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/The-Nature-Animal-Healing-ebook/dp/B002IPZBWC/ref=kinw_dp_ke?ie=UTF8&m=AG56TWVU5XWC2
See you Friday, 6/22, from 12 to 4PM at Whiskers Holistic Petcare 235 East 9th Street, in the heart of the East Village. And, maybe we’ll see you on TV!
